2002-04-25 Missed seeing my high school friend Ken when he was just in town. He tells me the time for the visit was squeezed by he and Margy attending a gala fund-raiser for a worthy cause.
2002-04-20 Who would have thought there could be another Reading Rat besides my recommended reading list? Yet there it is, a used book seller listed on the Advanced Book Exchange and run by Ardythe Basham, of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.
SEX AND THE CITY OF GOD At our parish, our two priests sent a letter to all parishioners When the issue of child abuse by admittedly a small number of priests first began to surface nearly a decade ago, the Archdiocese of Milwaukee took a strong stand in dealing with it by delineating clear policies. These policies regarding clergy conduct, include the obligation of reporting misconduct to civil authorities, the immediate removal of those involved in such misconduct from positions of trust, as well as the compassionate support and care for the victims of such misconduct. Copies of these policies are available in our parish office for review by any parishioner who wishes to consult them. Archdiocese fought hard in court Editor's Journal: The church abuse scandal

Priest calls for end to celibacy He made the call in his homilies over the weekend. Among the people listening to [Our Lady of Lourdes Pastor Fr. Thomas] Suriano was Sister Mary Howard Johnstone, a member of the five-member commission appointed by Archbishop Rembert Weakland to examine how the archdiocese has handled allegations of sexual abuse of minors by priests.Shouldn't the conclusions come after the looking into?
HARK! THE HERALD How gay is it? The Vatican spokesman [Dr. Joaquin Navarro-Valls, the popeís official liaison with the media and a psychiatrist by training] has questioned whether homosexuals can validly be ordained, comparing the situation of a gay priest who may not realize that he is gay to that of a gay man who marries a woman while also unaware of his sexual orientation. Dr. Navarro-Valls pointed out that just as such a marriage can be annulled on the grounds that it was invalid from the start, so, too, the ordination of a gay man might similarly be declared invalid.

Weakland gives priests abuse data Weakland said that sexual activity with a child who has not reached puberty is very serious and that the perpetrator is "incurable." But he drew a distinction between that and sexual contact between an adult and an older minor.
2002-03-18 Where Mickey Kaus sees Clinton's future, I see the past. Clinton is the best president we've had in a long time. That is the unspoken reason the sex charges haven't received as much play as you might expect. Reporters are patriots, too; it's their dirty little secret. ... Few journalists want to see the president crippled now that he is making some progress cracking large, intractable domestic problems.
