Bishop Weakland, Critic of Vatican, Lends Women His Ear on Abortion

Peter Steinfels reported, special to The New York Times, March 27, 1990.
It was the first of six ''listening sessions'' the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Milwaukee is sponsoring to give Catholic women a chance to express their feelings and beliefs about abortion. ''The polarization about this issue has become so great that I had to admit we needed dialogue about it within the Catholic community as well as with others,'' the 62-year-old Archbishop said a few hours before the first session was held in Fond du Lac at the northern end of the 10-county archdiocese.
